Omega Speedmaster: The "First Omega in Space" Returns

04 October 2024

The First Omega in Space' returns to the collection. This watch, one of the most sought-after timepieces from Omega, is a true icon. It now appears in a modern version with an updated movement and Co-Axial Master Chronometer certification. The famous timepiece, originally marked with reference number CK 2998, first appeared in 1959. It belongs to the second generation of the Speedmaster family. These new models embody the same style that characterised this generation of watches. NASA astronaut Walter Wally Schirra, who bought the watch for himself, was already a big fan of the chronograph. He wore it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury programme on 3 October 1962. This significant moment gave the CK 2998 its nickname First Omega in Space' and marked the beginning of Omega's role in space exploration.CaseThe Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space’ has a symmetrical case with a diameter of 39.70 mm. It is made of polished and brushed stainless steel, giving it a robust yet elegant appearance. The lugs are slightly curved, adding to the aesthetic appeal. The dark bezel, made of black aluminium, features the traditional tachymetric scale, including the dot above 90' characteristic of the first Speedmasters. The resistant crystal, reminiscent of the original design, adds to the vintage charm but is actually a new synthetic sapphire crystal (instead of Hesalite) with similar properties. The water resistance of the case is 30 bar (300 m), making it suitable for aquatic activities. The case back bears ?SPEEDMASTER, ?THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE and ?OCTOBER 3, 1962 engraving.DialThe dial of the Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space’ is grey-blue, inspired by the CVD coating used on some CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. It features two Omega vintage logos, one on the dial and the other on the crown, emphasising the watch's historical significance. The Alpha' hands for hours and minutes are filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, ensuring readability in low light conditions. The central lance' seconds hand has a white coating that matches the printed markings, adding to the dial's legibility. Despite the retro design, the dial maintains a high level of functionality and precision.MovementThe Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space’ is powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. This modern version of the Calibre 321, which equipped the original watches, offers the latest standards in precision, performance, and magnetic resistance. The movement features a co-axial escapement, reducing friction and enhancing longevity. It operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 50 hours. The Master Chronometer certification, conducted by METAS, ensures that the movement meets strict criteria for accuracy and performance. Strap/BraceletThe Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space’ is available with three different options. It can be fitted with a black or brown leather strap, each equipped with a pin buckle. Alternatively, there is a fully metallic flat-link bracelet. This bracelet features Omega's patented comfort clasp, providing additional adjustment options and enhanced comfort. Regardless of the option chosen, the watch promises to sit securely and comfortably on the wrist.Price & AvailabilityThe Omega Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space‘ is an exclusive timepiece that will be produced in limited numbers.
